Chris Cornell Honored with Scholarship at UCLA’s School of Law
A coalition led by Vicky Cornell has created an endowed fund of more than $1 million to support student scholarships at UCLA School of Law.
The Chris Cornell Scholarship honors Cornell’s commitment to justice, human rights and advocacy for those in need. Members of the coalition include several friends and colleagues of Cornell as well as supporters of UCLA Law.
UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said the endowment is a fitting tribute to Cornell. “This endowment honors an influential musical artist who cared about human rights and enables others the opportunity to make a positive impact in the world,” he said.
Chris Cornell died in May 2017 at the age of 52, but his artistic and humanitarian legacy lives on. “Vicky Cornell and all the people paying tribute to Chris Cornell’s tremendous legacy are helping to ensure that the law school will extend and strengthen its commitment to our students and to the pursuit of justice,” said UCLA Law Dean Jennifer Mnookin. “Through the work of the Promise Institute and the scholarships that this fund will support, Chris Cornell’s influence will be felt at UCLA Law and beyond for generations to come.”
“My husband and I agreed that given the opportunity of education, people have the power to change the world,” Vicky Cornell said. “UCLA School of Law is an institution known for its academic excellence and we are proud the Chris Cornell Scholarship will provide funding for future students and future leaders of the world under the leadership of Dean Mnookin and Chancellor Block.”

Chris Cornell Awarded Inaugural ‘The Promise’ Award By Human Rights Watch
On November 15, Chris’s widow Vicky attended a fundraising dinner for The Los Angeles Committee of Human Rights Watch at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where she accepted the organization’s inaugural Promise Award on behalf of her late husband, for his song ‘The Promise’. Vicky was accompanied by Chris’s bandmates, Kim Thayil and Matt Cameron of Soundgarden.
Watch Serj Tankian present the award to Vicky, Kim and Matt here.
The presentation was followed by a special performance of “The Promise” by Ryan Tedder and Drew Brown of OneRepublic.
Inspired by the film and song that powerfully depicted the atrocities committed against the Armenian people; the award recognizes an outstanding song, television show, or film that advances the values of equity and justice in an original and powerful way.
Fittingly, the inaugural honor was awarded to the late legendary singer and songwriter Chris Cornell in recognition of his song, The Promise. The award was presented by Producers of The Promise Eric Esrailian, Mike Medavoy, Writer/Director Terry George, and Singer/Songwriter, Human Rights Activist, and Composer Serj Tankian. All proceeds from the song go to benefit refugees and children, and the dinner raised over $1.8 million, setting a new fundraising record for the Human Rights Watch’s LA Chapter.
Kim Thayil said: “We were honored to be at the presentation of the “Promise” award by Human Rights Watch to Vicky Cornell in recognition of Chris’ humanitarian work We’re proud the award’s name will be shared with that of his song and in honor of his commitment to universal justice, freedom & dignity.”
Justin Connolly, Director of Human Rights Watch’s Los Angeles Committee, said: “We are proud to name this award after The Promise, and present the inaugural award to Chris Cornell’s inspiring song.”
